"He killed himself - it was suicide," one of our confidential informants (CI's) in Colorado messaged us. "Nothing official will be announced until after results of an autopsy, but the Colorado Springs cops are investigating this as a likely suicide," our source said.
We checked with police and were told authorities "do not suspect foul play at this time."
Air Force Col. Gene Caughey was scheduled to face court-martial Oct. 17 after being hit with rape and sexual assault charges late last year. The former vice-commander of the 50th Space Wing at Schriever AFB Colorado was discovered dead in his Colorado Springs home. He was 46 years old.
ACCUSED OF RAPING A WOMAN
The senior officer had been accused of holding a female victim against the wall and then the floor as he allegedly raped her. He was also charged with sending photographs of his penis (while in uniform) through the U.S. mail. If convicted, the 23-year military veteran could have gone to prison for the rest of his life.
Caughey's civilian attorney, Ryan Coward, called the death a "tragedy" and said that the colonel had been "actively involved" in working on his defense in preparation for trial next month. He said his client's demise was "a total shock" to him.
Ironically, Caughey came close to death once before. On the morning of 9/11, the then- captain was on duty in his office at the Pentagon when a hijacked airliner hit the building. At the time, the junior officer was commended for helping survivors escape the flames and smoke.
Now the colonel is dead by his own hand.
