PUBLISHER'S SPOTLIGHT

Here we go with another edition of MILITARY BOOKSHELF, but this one contains a first for us here at MilitaryCorruption.com. Today, we launch a new feature called PUBLISHER'S SPOTLIGHT

We thought you, dear reader, might want to know more about the publishers whose books we recommend to you. This is especially important because MCC takes pride in bringing you excellent selections from some of the smaller publishing houses here and abroad.

One of those is located in the beautiful hills of Jefferson, North Carolina. McFarland Publishers is proud to be an independent operation, maintaining high standards and running their own printing press.

They are noteworthy for excellent books on the military, pop culture (with emphasis on film), sports, literature and history.

Below, we want to highlight four recent releases which are worthy of your attention and a special place on your home bookshelf.

"SURVIVING A JAPANESE INTERNMENT CAMP"
By Rupert Wilkinson

Perhaps the best book we have ever read on the civilian POW's in World War II Philippines. This 234-page long tome chronicles in words and rare photographs the ordeal of Americans, many of them women and children, at the Santo Tomas University prison camp in Manila.

Using a wealth of Santo Tomas memoirs and diaries, plus interviews with other ex-internees and veteran army liberators - a salute to the men of the 1st Cavalry Division - this fascinating book reveals how the children reinvented their own society, while adults coped with crowded dormitories, evaded sex restrictions, smuggled in food, and through a strong internee government, dealt with their Japanese overlords.

This book is rated FOUR STARS.

"TORTURED INTO FAKE CONFESSION -
THE DISHONORING OF KOREAN WAR PRISONER
COL FRANK H. SCHWABLE, USMC"

By Raymond B. Lech

A must-read for everyone interested in how the mind copes under Communist brainwashing.

In 1952, Col. Schwable became the second highest-ranking officer held as a prisoner-of-war by the Communists. His captivity was marked by months of physical and psychological torture that resulted in a signed confession asserting the United States had used germ warfare on Korean civilians.

This serious allegation reverberated throughout the American media with devastating consequences to the colonel's' reputation. Once Schwable was released, an official Marine Corps inquiry was made into his false confessions and uncovered the effect psychological torture had on a distinguished and decorated officer's actions.

We rate this book FOUR STARS.

"VIETNAM WAR NURSES"
Edited by Patricia Rushton

An important contribution to the existing literature about the experiences of American military nurses during the Vietnam war.

Eighteen nurses who served in Vietnam during the war present their personal accounts in this book. They represent all military branches and both genders. They served in front line hospitals, hospital ships, large medical canters and small clinics.

They speak of caring for casualties during a war filled with controversy, pain and suffering, as well as patriotism.

This book rates FOUR STARS.

"WRITING THE WAR - MY TEN MONTHS IN THE JUNGLES, STREETS AND PADDIES OF SOUTH VIETNAM, 1968"
By Stephen E. Atkins

The story of a young draftee sent to fight in Vietnam before he could complete his PhD in history.

Serving as both point-man and sniper, he experienced six weeks of combat duty, averaging a firefight each week with heavy casualties.

With his advanced college degree and a case of beer for a bribe, he then transferred to the 19th Military History Detachment and spent the remainder of his tour of duty traveling the Mekong Delta, Plain of Reeds, and other areas near Saigon.

This memoire is the result of intense fighting, careful documentation, and an illicit diary.

We rate this book THREE STARS.
