It's happened again. For the 14th time this year, Navy brass have fired a commanding officer, citing the usual boiler-plate: ". . . due to loss of ability of (fill in name on blank line) to lead."

The latest skipper to "walk the plank" is Capt. David Solms, former top dog at The Trident Training Facility in Bangor, Wash.

The Navy is being tight-lipped about just why Solms was relieved of command. The only explanation for the action is a cryptic line in the press release saying Solms is out due to an "inappropriate personal relationship." No other details. That doesn't help Solms one bit. Now rumors are rife as to just what really happened. Was he involved with a male or a female? What did he do to attract the attention of the NCIS? Nobody is talking, at least for now.

FORMER SUB COMMANDER

The four-striper was relieved by Capt. Kenneth Swan, commanding officer of the Submarine Learning Center in Groton, Conn.

Solms arrived at Bangor and assumed his former command in September 2009. He was C.O. of the attack sub USS Hawaii between 2005 and 2007.

His career clearly at an end, Solms has been reassigned to "other duties" while he processes papers, probably for retirement.
