The highest-ranking Navy officer to date, implicated in the "Fat Leonard" bribery scandal (see related stories box below for more details), has pleaded guilty in federal court to making a false official statement.

At deadline, it is unclear exactly how much jail time RADM Robert Gilbeau could get, but you can safely bet the farm that this flag-officer will end up with just a slap-on-the-wrist and quietly retire on a fat pension. If a CPO or LT had made a false statement to the NCIS, they wouldn't be so lucky. Different spanks for different ranks. Just one admiral has been court-martialed since the end of World War II.

The Fremont, Calif. native and 1983 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, is the 14th person, so far, charged in what some call the worst Navy scandal in many years. He has been released on $75,000 bond and faces sentencing in San Diego on August 26th.

THE NAVY KEEPS GILBEAU "ON ICE"

"Admiral Gilbeau accepts responsibility for the decisions he made and for his conduct," defense attorney David Benowicz told MilitaryCorruption.com.

A onetime supply officer aboard the U.S.S. Nimitz (CVN-68), Gilbeau is currently assigned as a "special assistant" - in other words, kept on ice until he can retire with pension intact - to the chief of the U.S. Naval Supply Systems Command, Defense Logistics Agency.

Chief of Naval Operations, ADM John Richardson, issued the following statement: "This behavior is inconsistent with our standards and the expectations the nation has for us . . . it damages the trust that our nation places in us and is an embarrassment to the Navy."
