AIR FORCE ACADEMY INSTRUCTOR
PLEADS GUILTY TO SEX CHARGES
FEMALE CAPTAIN FINED $5,000
AND GIVEN THE BOOT
The latest sex scandal to rock the troubled Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs has resulted in a guilty plea by a female professor.
Capt. Christine Fiori admitted she had affairs with two cadets during the year 2000. The 32 year-old instructor in civil engineering claimed her behavior resulted from "low self-esteem" after a bitter divorce.
"I made some very poor personal and professional choices," she said. "The lines between cadets and officers got blurry for me."
Fiori pled guilty to two counts of dereliction of duty and one of making a false statement. She could have received up to six years at Leavenworth if she had stood court-martial and been found guilty.
Instead, the captain - who joined the Air Force in 1997 - was fined $5,000 and dismissed from the service.
The Fiori case comes on the heels of an earlier scandal involving a Roman Catholic priest.
Lt. Col. Pat Nicholson was kicked out of the Academy after Maj. Susan Archibald accused him of having sex with her, beginning back when she was a cadet.
