It's been said a picture is worth a thousand words. We can only hope the one above is worth a court martial, even if it makes the Navy blanch to punish an incompetent and unstable "politically correct" poster girl for all the super feminists at the Pentagon and the U.S. Naval Academy.
The EXCLUSIVE copyrighted pix above, available to NAVY TIMES and STARS AND STRIPES for free if they have the guts to publish it, clearly shows how close to death came the crews of two United States warships.
It is crazy for the cruiser COWPENS and destroyer McCAIN to be "drag-racing" like a couple of "hot rods" on the high seas. This "full throttle" contest in the Pacific Ocean came within 300 feet of disaster. Note the crew members on the fantail of DDG 56 looking over in horror at the bow of the 10,000 ton COWPENS, bearing down on them, in what must have seemed like a collision course.
It certainly did to everyone on the bridge of the guided-missile cruiser - everyone, that is, but crazed Capt. Holly Graf who refused to allow a "collision alarm" to sound. As if THAT would have made any difference if her boat had sliced off the fantail of the McCAIN and sent it and several hundred sailors to the bottom of the ocean.
PENTAGON CAN'T COVER THIS ONE UP - PIX AND WITNESSES
Read the words of an eye-witness who saw it all.
"We were on an exercise with the (destroyer) McCAIN when she (Graf) decided to have a high-speed race.
"The McCAIN lines up next to us (the COWPENS) and then both ships went full throttle. The whole thing was crazy. Graf would go nuts if any of the OOD's came within a few miles of a contact, and now here she was ready to drag-race a destroyer.
"At one point, we nearly hit the McCAIN's fantail when the ships came within 300 feet of the other. I held my breath and prayed to God we wouldn't collide, because many sailors could have been killed and at least one Navy warship sunk at sea", a sailor told MilitaryCorruption.com
"What really scared me about Graf was when the bridge team on the COWPENS was about to sound COLLISION ALARM, but she ordered them not to. That's insane! First she endangers the crews of two ships with a full-throttle race, then she makes a decision that could have been disaster if we'd rammed the McCAIN."
The incident took place the afternoon of February 12, 2009. Isn't it great how these modern cameras "time and date" everything? Graf made sure no report of the near-disaster was filed, we are told. But that's not the first time the skipper has been accused by crew of lying and falsifying records.
"GRAF ORDERED US TO LIE AND SAY WE CAME OUT AT 10 KNOTS, NOT 25"
There was that incident in Italy when a petulant and perhaps PMS-addled Graf insisted her then ship, the destroyer Winston Churchill, steam out to sea at 25 knots. Later, according to one officer, she ordered the log "changed" to show the ship, which incurred serious damage to its underside, was only traveling at 10 knots. It was obvious her intention was to enforce that bit of deceit with her "absolute power" as captain.
We are sure the Navy would have quickly "blown off" our report, had we not produced a very clear photo - ala Jack Ruby, ready to plug Lee Harvey Oswald in the basement of the Dallas Police station. The PAO drill is always the same: "Lie and deny, lie and deny." But this time, that just won't work. The proof is in the photograph. And we have it.
Get the NCIS and IG in on the job. Check the ship's logs for that day and see if either skipper made note that a terrible tragedy had almost taken place, that two very expensive guided-missile warships nearly collided at 32 knots due to gross negligence, horrible judgment, and an arrogant and "out-of-control" senior officer on the scene, none other than the much feared and hated Holly Graf.
GRAF CAN GET AWAY WITH ANYTHING, OR SO SHE THINKS
Like a cat with nine lives, the beedy-eyed skipper has had a long record of screw-ups. But not to worry. The emasculated and gutless Navy superior officers would always give Graf "glowing" fitness reports. Even when it was obvious she was unfit to command a row boat, much less the destroyer Churchill, these same PC "butt-boys" managed to give her an even more important command - the cruiser COWPENS.
We can thank God the coffee-cup throwing, "go for the throat" martinet didn't have a complete meltdown on the guided-missile cruiser and, as foul-mouthed "Capt Holly Queeg," fire off a few missiles in the direction of Russia or China. Well, that's not that easily done, but every member of the COWPENS knew not to ruffle the feathers of the spoiled brat.
"One time I approached her to gently say how to do something she should have known anyway, and I got a curt "GOT IT" before I'd finished speaking," a fellow officer recalled. "I knew that meant for me to shut up immediately and get the hell away from her before she bit your head off."
Actually she doesn't "bite," at least not that we know of. You might ask her BF back in Bath, Maine. But Graf does curse a blue streak. All the time. One XO (she burned through three of them during her tumultuous tour on the Churchill) was told: "You're the dumbest MF I've ever seen." Underlings were regularly told they were "stupid a-holes" as she yelled at men to fetch her a cup of coffee.
A TERRIBLE RAGE INSIDE THE FOUR-STRIPE CAPTAIN
The rage that erupted from the scrawny 5' 3" tiny terror was something to behold. There were many cases of hard objects thrown at the heads of officers and enlisted alike.
"When she was amped up, she could make the toughest man-hating bull dyke appear to be Mother Teresa, in comparison," a JO that served on the COWPENS told us.
In Graf's most famous, or infamous, incident, she did a "Captain Bligh" when she grabbed a male officer around the neck and started to squeeze. That is the ultimate NO-NO for any commander or boss. When you "put your hands on" a subordinate, it's end of the line for you, whether you're a senior chief petty officer or skipper of the boat. But instead of being forced to retire, "Horrible Holly," nick-named "The Sea H.A.G." by her many victims, got to stay in the Navy.
Not only did she escape real punishment, the wimpy leadership - and we mean YOU, Roughhead and Mullen - tried to pull a fast one recently and quietly slip her into a rear admiral's slot at AEGIS (BMD) in Virginia. After all, Holly "the special one," has a big sister who's already a flag officer. Her daddy is said to be a retired four-striper. This is one gal with "big-time connections."
Her most fierce proponents have been members of "The Sisterhood," a small but powerful group of lesbian senior officers at the Pentagon. To them, Holly can do no wrong. No woman "of their kind" can. And, if someone like Holly's criticized, well, that's "sexism," don't you know? Men are such chauvinists, anyway.
A COURAGEOUS FEMALE OFFICER GOES ON RECORD ABOUT GRAF
One woman that doesn't buy into the PC clap-trap is retired LCDR Mary Kirby, USN (ret.)
"My first reaction as a fellow female SWO JO and shipmate of Holly's way back when, was elation she was finally relieved of command . . . I feel sorry - sorry her career made it as far as it did, affecting so many negatively. I'm sorry for all the officers and enlisted she left with hitches dead or dying in her relentless path as she clawed and crawled to the top with a pile of bodies under her. I am sorry it took so long to stop her!
"She was extremely arrogant and actually believed her promotions and career was owed her because of who she was. Retire, Holly, do the right thing. Just go."
Now the Navy has their very own Jill Metzger. Maybe worse. At least Metzger didn't endanger the lives of hundreds of sailors in an egotistical "full-throttle" drag race at sea.
There must be justice. The UCMJ is meaningless if Graf can get away with things that, if a man had committed a tenth of them, he'd walk the plank and leave without a pension. Can you spell the name: (LCDR) Syneeda Penland? Her life and career was destroyed and she sent to the brig and robbed of her pension because she was "convicted" of "adultery."
Well, at least that's one thing the unmarried Graf will never be charged with.
We feel Graf's terrible record cannot be excused or rewarded by promotion to rear admiral. You should watch your back, Joseph Horn. You've only been in charge at AEGIS (BMD) since November. Holly has powerful friends, and you, admiral, might be shoved aside at any time.
If the CNO and Adm. Mullen care at all about the sailors instead of gathering political "brownie points" from the Obama White House, they will order a new IG investigation into the latest incident we have exclusively reported here. Graf should at least face an Article 32 hearing, and, if charges are warranted (and we think they are) she should face court-martial.
Hello, Miramar! At least the whales aren't too far away, at SEA WORLD in San Diego.
It is possible Graf could be deranged and so ill that medical care would be merciful. But we doubt if "Horrible Holly" would humble herself enough to admit that she needed "anger management" courses long ago. She wants to be an admiral, just like "big sister" Robin, who's been pulling strings from the shadows.
Maybe Holly will come out on top once again.
