GUNNERY SGT, JOSEPH FELIXA Marine Corps drill instructor who brutalized recruits and showed a special hatred for Muslims, has been found guilty of multiple crimes at the conclusion of his 10-day court martial at Camp LeJeune, N.C.

Gunnery Sgt. Joseph Felix was convicted of maltreatment, hazing, disobeying orders, making a false official statement and being drunk and disorderly on duty. It took the panel 12 hours to come back with the verdict.  At press time, the NCO has not been given his prison sentence, but sources expect Felix could spend up to 20 years behind bars.

The sensational case centered around the death of a young Muslim boot from Michigan who allegedly threw himself off a barracks balcony 40 feet to his death to escape further beatings and harassment by his sadistic drill instructor.  Prior to that, Rafeel Siddiqi had been singled out for especially harsh treatment by Felix, who violated numerous regulations when he hazed and brutally beat young recruits under his control.

WORST D.I. SINCE McKEON CASE IN 1956

Not since the drownings of six Marine recruits in Ribbon Creek some 60 years ago has the USMC Recruit Depot at Parris Island suffered such a public relations black eye.

Back then, it was a drunken Staff Sgt. Matthew McKeon who marched his men into a swampy area of Ribbon Creek where, in some places, water was above their heads.  The incident occurred at night, and in the confusion, the drownings took place.  McKeon admitted that he had been drinking earlier in the evening.

The D.I. was court-martialed, busted, did time in the brig, but remained in the Corps.  In the Felix case, no way will the 15 year veteran stay a Marine  He has done tremendous damage to the USMC's image and his name will go into the record books as one of, if not the worst D.I., to have ever served at Parris Island. It is our humble opinion that he deserves such a reputation.
