FEMALE SGT AT LACKLAND
LOSES HAND IN MAILBOMB ATTACK
FBI ARRESTS FORMER WORKER
DISGRUNTLED EX-AIRMAN

"He got me," Master Sgt Janet McWilliams told investigators after a mail bomb blew off her left hand as she
opened a package at the 342nd Security Squadren at San Antonio's Lackland AFB.

The badly injured senior NCO knew it was a disgruntled former airman who had been discharged from the Air Force in June. McWilliams played a role in booting the airman out and now he had paid her back.

"The parcel was addressed to her," a FBI spokesman said. "She was the intended target."

It didn't take federal agents and Air Police long to locate the suspect. Brandon L. Walters was taken into custody in his room at the Cactus Hotel on S. Flores Street. He offered no resistance.

The 29 year-old ex-Airman was arraigned in Federal court in San Antonio on assault and bomb-related charges. He faces a minimum penalty of 30 years in prison and a maximum of life.

"It was a revenge thing," one investigator said. "McWilliams was one of the NCO's that got him discharged and he apparently sought to get even."

Walters had stayed at the downtown hotel the last couple months. One occupant told police that Walters "pretty much kept to himself."

Givens told hotel workers he had been in the Navy and was in San Antonio to "settle some business" before enrolling in college. According to hotel owner Norman Given, Walters often strolled through the lobby wearing a camouflage uniform and combat boots.
