Let's get this straight from the "get-go." We love the Marine Corps. We respect the Corps for its great fighting tradition and many sacrifices made in blood to protect our nation. But what we are about to say here may get a few Jarhead's noses out of joint. For that, we are sorry. But we have to tell it like it is.
Gen. James Mattis, Barak Hussein Obama's choice to be the new boss of Central Command, is not Jesus Christ. He isn't even the reincarnation of Chesty Puller or two-time Medal of Honor recipient Gen. Smedley Butler, although you might think so, from his press clips and fawning news coverage. Mattis is great copy and a colorful character. But we can't forget what he did to the Haditha Marines (see related stories box below). Neither can they.
Ask any gunny sergeant and he'll tell you UCI, "undue command influence" is poison. It violates the rights of the accused and reflects very badly on those who engage in it. That is why we must hold off on the hosannas for Gen. Mattis, at least until we have seen what he does in his new post. We certainly wish him well and pray for success in our battle against enemies in Afghanistan.
It is a matter of record that the Marine Corps Court of Military Appeals backed up a ruling of a lower court that Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani of the so-called "Haditha Marines," had been "unfairly charged" in the alleged massacre of 2005 and was the victim of, and we quote, "unlawful command influence."
DID MATTIS DO IT TO GET THAT FOURTH STAR?
ONLY HE AND GOD KNOW FOR SURE
James Mattis - once well thought of and respected throughout the entire Marine Corps - seemed to morph into a man without honor as he got ready to pin on his fourth star, taking the witness stand trying to make sure Chessani would be the scapegoat for the "politically-incorrect" killings in Iraq five years ago.
We seem to recall a very "un-PC" statement in 2005 by Mattis that won cheers from many Marines, but disdain and disgust from liberals in Washington, when he said: " . . . it's quite a lot of fun to fight. You know, it's a hell of a hoot. I like brawling. It's fun to shoot some people." Maybe those words came back to haunt Mattis recently, when he was passed over for Commandant of the Corps, the top job going to Gen. James Amos.
Why then, would Obama pick a man like Mattis? Was it because he was the very best choice for the job and no politics was involved? Or is it true and a fact of life, all promotions above major involve "politics," especially the flag ranks, when you want more than anything to add that fourth star on your shoulders?
Gen. Mattis deserves the benefit of the doubt and our very best wishes. But we're going to be watching him - closely. And so will a good many Marines. Especially those he shamefully threw "under the bus" during the Haditha trials at Camp Pendleton.
