His rise in the ranks was spectacular. Ron Lewis went from Chicago street kid to three-star general, with an unlimited future ahead of him. Now he's been fired.
The African-American "rising star" was very close to his mentor, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter. That's what makes this sudden action so shocking. "Carter treated him (Lewis) like a son," one of our Pentagon confidential informants told us. "It has to be very bad for Ash to have taken such drastic action."
The lanky, master aviator and former chief of Army Public Affairs seemed headed for the top. "But he stepped on his dick," a colonel messaged MCC tonight. "It was an improper relationship."
A FAST RISE AND SPECTACULAR FALL
Ron Lewis was not only Carter's senior military advisor, he was a trusted confidant.. At 50 years old, Lewis was headed to the top. Maybe chief of staff of the Army someday. But any chance of that happening now, has absolutely evaporated.
Pentagon flaks will only use the word "misconduct" to describe the general's problem. But things are much more serious, with the general set to maybe lose a lot more than just his military career.
"I expect the highest possible standards of conduct from the men and women in their department, particularly from those serving in senior positions. There is no exception," the SecDef said in a statement.
Translation - Lewis is in so much trouble now, that even his doting boss can't save him.
