We have always admired Marine Col. Shane Tomko.  In our view, he served our country well for more than three decades.  It was only in the last few years, his life and behavior spun out of control.

When the highly-respected former commander of the Wounded Warrior Regiment at Quantico was fired in 2015, we backed him up.  Yes, he kissed a female Marine against her will, and used language certainly unbecoming an officer and gentleman.  But he needed help.  They knew he had a drinking problem, and the USMC preferred to push him out the door after he did 50 days in the brig and paid a $10,000 fine.

The former NCO and “Mustang” officer took forced retirement and tried to pick up the pieces when he returned to his hometown of Quincy, Ill.  He became pastor of Parkview Church.  At 54 years of age, Tomko seemed to have turned the corner. That came crashing down on him when he was arrested last week.

ALLEGED ABUSES COMMITTED AGAINST CHILDREN

Tomko was hit with seven felony charges issued by police in Virginia Beach, Va.  According to court documents, the colonel allegedly abused three children over the past 15 years.  We don’t have the names, but a source close to the investigation tell us the “victims” are family members.

The charges include three counts of aggravated sexual battery, three more of taking indecent liberties, and one of cruelty to children.  If convicted, he could spend the rest of his life behind bars.  This is a man who was so admired in the Corps that when he faced his trouble two years ago, four active duty and retired general officers testified as to his “high character.”  One of them was someone our readers will immediately know – the former C. O. of the U.S. Southern Command.  He is also President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, Gen. John Kelly..

Please remember Shane Tomko is innocent until proven guilty.  We don’t know if he is guilty, despite our disappointment at the direction his life has taken.  But we haven’t forgotten the railroad job Marine Col. Dan Wilson got earlier this year.  Let’s see what unfolds in the days and weeks ahead.
