West Point isn’t what it used to be. It hasn’t been since the USMA started lowering its standards some 50 years ago, and things have only gotten worse since then. Commie cadets, same-sex weddings, political correctness. Be sure to read our related stories box below.

The latest shame to fall on the once-respected institution is the fact that three members of the same class (1997) – John and Danielle Kays, plus Matthew Barrow, are now either convicted or admitted criminals. They deservedly will be spending various length stretches behind bars.

The trio participated as DOD civilians in a bribery scheme at the Army’s Communications Electronics Command, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md.
Federal prosecutors say the Kays, as Army employees, steered $21 million in subcontracts to Barrows in exchange for kickbacks.

ANOTHER DISHONOR TO THE LONG, GRAY LINE

Kays, of Pinehurst, N.C. was sentenced by Judge Catherine C. Blake in Baltimore Federal Court to six years in the slammer. He must “forfeit” some $630,000 in property and make $880,000 restitution to the government. His wife, Danielle, gets only 18 months in prison and Barrows, 44, has not yet been sentenced. He has entered a guilty plea to the fraud scheme and may get a lighter-than-usual sentence when he learns his fate.

The bribes were paid between 2008 and 2014, according to court papers. The Kays allegedly used the ill-gotten loot to buy and expensive home, cars, and took vacations on Uncle Sam’s dime. If we had our druthers, the three would also pay back the government the cost of their wasted education at West Point.

“Mad Dog” Mattis needs to get a handle on what’s been happening to our beloved West Point. We know the USMA is a reflection of society as a whole, but this once-venerated institution is fast becoming a playpen for those who never should have been admitted as cadets in the first place.
