Call it a “gut feeling,” intuition, or whatever, but we caution everyone to take a deep breath and withhold judgment on this case until all the facts are in.

The NCIS is holding their cards close to the vest, and we don’t have enough details to know whether Col. Daniel Wilson is indeed a 55 year-old pervert, or a senior officer who’s been set up in the wake of an ugly divorce action. The Mason, Washington native is entitled to the presumption of innocence, until proven guilty, despite the usual “guilty until proven innocent” all military members actually labor under.

The fact that Wilson joined the Corps way back in 1981, and didn’t make bird colonel until nearly 30 years later, shows him to be a “plodder” who managed to survive Marine Corps politics for a very long time. If he was a genuine child-molester, we wonder if something wouldn’t have shown up long before now.

WE’LL JUST HAVE TO WAIT ON THIS ONE

Bitter wives or vengeful ex-girlfriends know that one of the best ways to ruin a Marine officer is to call the NCIS and make a sensational sex charge. One rumor has it that Wilson allegedly sexually molested a six year-old (no gender given).

Since few details, other than Wilson faces three counts of sexual assault and abuse of a child, along with four counts of assault and battery on a child under the age of 16, a “rush to judgment” here could be very unfair. We’ll just have to wait for this case to play out. Our USMC confidential informants at Camp Lejeune have been alerted, and we’re closely monitoring the incoming e-mail, so we may have a follow-up story soon. Let’s hope so.

Wilson had been G-3 Operations officer for the II Marine Expeditionary Force. Prior to that, he served as chief of staff for the III Marine Expeditionary Force in the Pacific and also held command as C.O. of the Weapons and Field Training Battalion, Military Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C.

The accused colonel has been assigned to administrative duties and is not being held in confinement at the North Carolina installation.
