NAVY SEAL'S FATE HANGS IN THE BALANCE

NORFOLK NAVAL STATION, Va. -- Stephen Varanko is not a candidate for sainthood.
We think the horn-dog Navy SEAL needs to learn a lesson from the hell he finds himself
But the 11-year CPO should pay a stiff price for what he has done, not what a spurned ex-gal pal (who acts like a "psycho," not a "victim"), says he did. Especially when two weeks after the alleged "rape," she's sending him a video professing undying love and a pathetic appeal for the married sailor to be her "ONE AND ONLY, FOREVER." Yeah, right. In your dreams, lady.
A PUNISHMENT THAT FITS THE ACTUAL CRIME
A fair resolution to this case would be a monetary fine and bust down to E-4 or E-5, with the SEAL having the chance to earn them back down the road if he keeps himself out of trouble and shows he deserves to be a chief petty officer in United States Navy.
Varanko has testified he had "consensual" sex with the "victim" during a training session in Kentucky two years ago. He was married at the time, and obviously was cheating on his wife. But he does not deserve to be kicked out of the Navy and tossed behind bars at the Leavenworth D.B. for the rest of his life on some spurious "rape" charge.
MilitaryCorruption.com contends he dumped his girlfriend and she sought revenge once she finally realized he wasn't about to leave his wife for her. What better way to get even with Varanko than to take advantage of the highly-charged political environment we live in where ambitious members of Congress think if they can get more and more male scalps on their belt, the world will be a better place all around.
COURAGE NEEDED FROM JUDGE HERE
We have been online 17 years here at MCC and are firmly on record defending females from real rapes and sexual assaults. That there is a serious problem with this in all branches of the military is an absolute fact. But it is also true, that some so-called "victims" aren't really Little Bo Peep, as pure and innocent as the driven snow. Some do lie and bear false witness.
In this case, we feel the accuser is trying to take advantage of the situation and just might succeed. It's up to the convening authority - not a panel or court-martial jury - to decide Varanko's fate, so we urge the military judge, CDR Heather Partridge, to avoid the easy way out and do what might appear to be the "politically-correct" thing.
Navy SEALS, the entire fleet, and many more besides - judging from the hundreds of thousands of hits we've been getting the past few days - are closely watching what happens in the Varanko proceedings. We implore the judge to show the courage needed to impose a fair and just punishment in the face of what must be immense pressure from the politicians and feckless Navy brass to hang Chief Varanko from the yardarms.
