Does everyone remember Beaudry Robert “Bowe” Bergdahl? He’s the Army sergeant who decided to send all of his stuff home and join the the opposing side. Bergdahl walked off his post in search of enemy forces in eastern Afghanistan on June 30, 2009. The Army sent out search teams to find Bergdahl and three troopers where badly injured on missions solely conducted to find Bergdahl. We heard that people died in those searches but we could not verify that to be true.
Bergdahl was ultimately captured by the Taliban and held for just under five years. The American government decided to pay a ransom to get Bergdahl back. Once they did, he was charged with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
President Obama had a gathering in the Rose Garden of the White House to introduce Bergdahl’s parents. His father said he was so proud of Bowe, presumably for joining the enemy like he did.
It still is a mystery as to why President Barrack Obama left office without giving Bergdahl a full pardon. It seemed that everything was on track to pardon Bergdahl, but the pardon never came. Why? Well, some believe that President Obama was afraid of a legacy that would be not too flattering on how he handled the Bergdahl case.
We don’t see why President Obama would have been concerned about protecting his legacy in this particular case, because the damage to his legacy was already done when we gave five top Taliban commanders in exchange for Bergdahl. We will bet you there was probably a wad of cash to boot. One or more of those Taliban commanders went right back to the battlefield to kill as many Americans as he could.

BERGDAHL’S SENTENCE WAS APPROVED
Gen. Abrams, upheld Bergdahl’s sentence. Abrams was the convening authority, who convened the court-martial for Bergdahl. Once the court convicts someone in a court he convened, then the General must review and approve (or disapprove) the judge’s findings.
Bergdahl was sentenced to forfeit $10,000 in pay, a drop in rank from sergeant (E-5) to private (E-1) and a dishonorable discharge, which prevents him allegedly from receiving any medical or other benefits offered to most veterans. The court could have given Bergdahl life in prison for his desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. Prosecutors requested he serve 14 years at hard labor in Ft. Leavenworth.
Because the court handed down a punitive discharge, the case automatically goes to the Army Court of Criminal Appeals.
But, don’t cry for Bowe. He will be the darling of the radio and TV talk shows circuit. He’ll get a book and movie deal, we can see it all now. He won’t have to worry about a stinking dishonorable discharge preventing him from finding gainful employment, because he will get millions from his notoriety. Someone will, no doubt, come up with Bergdahl tennis shoes, like the kind he wore to run to the “oppressed” and make a bazillion dollars. Ah, such is America.
