National Guard BG Michael Bobeck is back in trouble again.

This time, the “bad boy” flag officer is being probed over suspicious e-mails between him and contractors doing business with the government.  He had previously been nailed (see related stories box below) for living rent-free in a contractor’s house and allegedly having an extramarital affair with a woman not his wife.

Bobeck got hit with a letter of reprimand last year, but oddly, he hasn’t retired – like many fat-cat generals do when they get their tail in a crack – he’s still on Guard rolls in the same rank he was before he got in his last jam.  What’s this about “different spanks for different ranks?”  Why hasn’t Bobeck been reduced one grade, in accordance with regulations that when you go out the back door to retirement, you are only paid a pension based on the last grade you “satisfactorily” served in?

WERE DEALS MADE “UNDER THE TABLE?”

Undoubtedly Bobeck is a man with many connections, but we fail to see why he is still an officer at all.  Usually when you get fired, like he was, you’re on the next train to Palookaville.

Back when he was still a colonel, GEN Bobeck, himself a pilot, was responsible for Guard aviation units all over the country.  That’s a sweet spot to be in when the contractors come around looking to do favors for you and cutting deals.

Our friends over at Project On Government Oversight” have Bobeck on their radar screen.  They say reports that the general exchanged e-mails with contractors for Black Hawk (Sikorsky) helicopters “should trigger a review to determine if he was influenced in his govt. responsibilities and violated the public trust.”

Stay tuned on this one, gang.  We’ll see if Bobeck gets anything more than the mere slap-on-the-wrist he’s already received.
