He had it made, but in the end, the colonel was a crook, despite his West Point ring and glittering resume’.
LTC Christopher James DeMure once had the world by the tail. A member of the Class of 2000, the 0-5 was due his colonel’s chicken wings soon, and likely, before retirement, the now 40 year-old officer could have reached flag rank. But that will never be.
The 2007 recipient of the GEN Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award, won’t be getting any more promotions or remain in the Army. His attempt to rip-off the guys at USAA and American Express failed, and he’s been caught.
TOOK INSURANCE GIANTS FOR BIG BUCKS
Investigators tell MilitaryCorruption.com the criminal acts took place between September of 2014 and February of this year. DeMure brazenly claimed all sorts of “losses” including Tiffany jewelry and other family possessions. The larcenous light colonel claimed lots of stuff stolen that hadn’t been taken at all.
His scam worked well for a while. According to court papers, DeMure allegedly received nearly $394,000 from USAA and AMEX combined. He admitted spending the money on luxury goods and paying off his credit cards. We don’t know if his wife was “high-maintenance” or not, but it seems he wasn’t very good at operating on a reasonable budget.
The U.S. Attorneys Office in Anchorage, Alaska – Demure was stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson – says the corrupt colonel (if convicted) faces up to 20 years behind bars and a $250,000 fine. Odds are very good he won’t be back at USMA for any class reunions any time soon.
