It was only 14 months ago that CDR Tammy Royal took her first command. She said she was “excited” to be skipper of the USS HARPERS FERRY (LSD 49), home-based at San Diego.

Now, she’s been made to walk the plank and isn’t responding to e-mail queries, even ours. The former enlisted sailor – Royal was an electronics technician the first nine years of her naval career – has been relieved of command for “poor performance,” according to a spokesperson.

RADM Cedric Pringle, commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 3, is said to have :lost confidence: in Royal’s ability to “effectively lead sailors.” No further details have been released. CDR Gervy Alota has assumed command of the vessel until a replacement can be named.

ALMOST THREE DECADES OF NAVAL SERVICE

The HARPERS FERRY, commissioned back in 1995, recently returned to San Diego from undergoing shipyard maintenance elsewhere.

CDR Royal is a native of Columbus, GA. and became an ensign eighteen years ago through the Navy’s enlisted to admiral program. Prior to becoming commander of LSD-49, she served on other amphibious warships: the RUSHMORE, AUSTIN, FORT McHENRY and IWO JIMA. On the MOUNT WHITNEY, she was the XO (executive officer).

Back in March 2017 she told her crew: “It is my responsibility to give you the tools, training and time to be able to go out and do your job properly.” How ironic, that it appears inability to do just that led to her dismissal.
