To be sure, the colonel had a first-rate resume’.
An Air Force Academy grad and master pilot who flew the C-17 and has more than 4,000 credited hours in the air, the former commanding officer of the 317th Airlift Wing at Dyess AFB in Texas was well on his way to flag rank and a great future.
Now, all his hopes seem far away as the 44 year-old senior officer has been relieved of command for fostering a “toxic climate.” Lt. Gen. Giovani Tuck pulled the trigger on Owens who says an investigation shows he “created an unhealthy work environment.”
MAY BE ON HIS WAY OUT THE DOOR
Col. Robert Boldenow, vice commander of the 317th has been named interim commander at the troubled unit.
Owens has been shifted to the 7th Bomb Wing at Dyess. Presumably he is busy working on his retirement papers. We are awaiting a copy of the specific charges against the colonel to see how he got his tail in a crack.
Colonel Owens served in major operations including
ALLIED FORCE,
ENDURING FREEDOM,
IRAQI FREEDOM,
INHERENT RESOLVE,
FREEDOM’S SENTINEL, and
DEEP FREEZE.
He has commanded a squadron as well as an operations group. Colonel Owens’ staff experience included working at both Air Mobility Command as well as The White House.
Now his resume has one big “ah-shit” among all those “atta-boys.”
